Sometimes we just wanna feel fancy, and if there’s one thing that gives us that fancy feeling it’s staying in a castle. The Irish countryside is known for its abundance of castles from different eras and now it’s time for the people of Dublin to go and experience five-hundred-year-old luxury with most of the usual modern appliances.
1. The Black Castle, North Tipperary
We’re getting serious Game of Thrones vibes from this castle, which isn’t surprising given that some of the series was filmed in Ireland. This 16th Century castle boasts spiral staircases, period-appropriate furniture and all of the details that make you feel as though you’ve taken a time machine back to Tudor Ireland (without the grim realities of that period). It looks pretty comfy, although you’ll have to do without a shower, bath, wifi and electricity (except for the plugs by the fridge). You can book here.
2. Carraigin Castle, County Galway
This 13th Century castle on Headford sleeps 9 people, and it boasts both historical character and modern comforts such as central heating and wifi. You can gaze out at Lough Corrib, or even take a boat out as the castle is literally on the shore. Plus, the parapets are accessible from the second floor, and they offer incredible views. You can book here.
3. Smithstown Castle, Country Clare
In beautiful County Clare sits this incredible, 15th Century stronghold. It’s only a 15-minute drive to the Cliffs of Moher, where a scene from Harry Potter was filmed. You can also easily visit the Aran Islands from here. There’s central heating, a dryer and even a record player but no Wifi so you’ll just have to make do, like when you visit your mam (maybe that’s only me). You can book your stay here.
4. Turin Castle, County Mayo
This place is pretty spectacular, with breathtaking views of the Partry Mountains. Breathe in that fresh Irish air in this incredible stay that boasts 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms (no waiting for the sink in the morning). You can book here, and it sleeps 15 people!
5. Ballyportry Castle, County Clare
Another fantastic County Clare stay is Ballportry Castle, a 17th Century castle that was built for comfort rather than fortitude. It’s a 30-minute drive to the Cliffs of Moher and it sleeps 8 people, However, there’s no heating or Wifi to prepare to go off-grid! You can book here.
