The newly renovated Clerys clock will be revealed today and, as Dubliners will know, it’s much more than just a clock. It’s a landmark.
Anybody who has ever lived in Dublin will have said at least once, “meet me under the Clerys clock”. People have been meeting under the clock for generations and now you can even say that to visitors because, for the first time in ages, you’ll be able to actually see it.
Let’s face it, the tarp and all of the scaffolding were not the prettiest so we’re looking forward to seeing the clock instead. It’s even got its own exhibition, Clerys: The Archives, also opening today (January 17).
The exhibition will feature artefacts from as far back as 1847, including photographs of the Clerys clock, documents and much more. A documentary entitled ‘Under the Clock’ will tell stories about the clock, including tales from Dubliners. I mean, many a married couple will have first met under the clock, after all.
You can see the exhibition from today until January 31, Saturday-Wednesday. It’s open 12 pm – 6 pm Wednesday to Saturday and stays open until 8 pm on Thursday and Friday. The department store closed down in 2015 but this year it will reopen with restaurants, hotels and plenty of shops too!
