It’s been a ‘long time coming’.
After what feels like a lifetime (although has only been two years), we may finally be hearing that dark and curious theme tune again soon. Giving a major update on the hit BBC show Luther during a Zoom chat on The All-New Capital Weekender, lead actor Idris Elba confirmed that the long-rumoured movie is finally on its way, with filming set to begin soon. Speaking to MistaJam, Elba said of his plans this year: “Apart from making more music, people that love my film and stuff, listen, I’m going to be making Luther: The Movie.
“I’m super excited and I hope the fans are sort of excited for that. It’s been a long time coming for a movie, so I’m excited about that.”
“We’ve been making the show for 10 years, so we’re making a film.”
Fans will remember that series five ended on a bit of a cliffhanger (*spoiler alert*), where Luther (Idris Elba) was arrested and Alice (Ruth Wilson) was left with an unknown fate. The show, too, was left with an unknown fate – with showrunners leaving a series renewal hanging in the balance and rumours running rife that fans would instead get a movie. The idea of a film has been a project long-supported by Idris Elba, who back in 2020 said of the idea: “I’ve made it very clear that I’d like to see Luther come back as a film”.
Commenting in 2018, Elba also said that the fifth series would not be the end of DCI Luther, saying of future plans “Our ambition is it falls on the scale of Seven”.
The series has successfully upped the ante season-to-season since its premiere back in 2010, so while a plot is currently unconfirmed for the upcoming movie, its safe to say we can expect John Luther wrapped up in more trouble and potentially a new, terrifying case to crack. The cast for the film is also TBC, so stay tuned for more news on Luther developments in the coming months.
