Netflix’s July offering is looking good.
The world might be gradually reopening, but we’ve gotten pretty acquainted with our sofas during the past year – and with Netflix’s upcoming July offering, we don’t think that will be changing anytime soon. From brand new original movies to the return of hit shows such as Atypical – July on Netflix is looking pretty sweet. Read on to see some of Secret Manchester’s top picks of fresh new content.
E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, now streaming
An absolute belter of a film, Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece E.T. is now streaming – starring a very young Henry Thomas and Drew Barrymore. If you haven’t seen it yet (and I’m raising my eyebrow at anyone who hasn’t!), the premise of the film follows an alien who’s left behind on Planet Earth, and is saved by a young boy named Elliot who provides him refuge in his home. It’s a heartwarming tale, and top quality Sunday viewing.
The Serpent, now streaming
This one’s for the crime drama lovers among us. BBC’s The Serpent is now streaming – and it was quite the hit when it originally aired earlier this year. Starring Tahar Rahim and Jenna Coleman, the limited series follows a French serial killer and his girlfriend, who target backpackers as part of their global ‘operation’. Things go awry, however, when Dutch diplomat, Herman Knippenberg, begins investigating murders connected with the pair.
Midsommar, now streaming
Midsommar is not for the faint of heart, with plenty of brutal, gruesome scenes, all infused with what can only be described as the world’s craziest acid trip. Starring Florence Pugh, the horror follows as a group of friends head to their friend’s ancestral commune in Sweden, hoping to immerse themselves in a festival that occurs once every 90 years. Unfortunately for them, however, they end up in the hands of a Scandinavian Pagan cult – who are about to begin a number of human sacrifices as part of their festival.
Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, now streaming
Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood was a big hitter when it premiered in cinemas just before the pandemic, and now, those who missed it can finally check it out on Netflix. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, Tarantino’s ninth film follows washed-up actor Rick (DiCaprio) and his stunt double Cliff (Pitt) during a thriving time in 1960’s Los Angeles – all the while, on-the-rise actress Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) and husband Roman Polanski are moving in next door.
Atypical (S4), now streaming
Atypical‘s final season has just aired on Netflix, with a heartwarming farewell for fans to enjoy. Watch as Sam – an autistic teenager – attempts to navigate life at high school in as ‘normal’ a way possible (from girlfriends to graduation) and all the dramas that come along with family life.
Virgin River (S3), now streaming
Fans of Virgin River didn’t have to wait too long for the show’s third instalment, with the full season now streaming (and plenty of twists and turns in store!). Picking up where it left off, Mel must continue to find her footing as a city girl in rural northern California, while navigating a complicated relationship with a local man who comes with a pregnant and disgruntled ex. Oh, the drama.
Chicken Run, now streaming
Need we say much about Chicken Run? The hit animation has returned to Netflix, meaning your weekend viewing is officially sorted. If you haven’t watched it yet, trust me when I say, you’re missing out on a number of long-running cultural references.
Never Have I Ever (S2), July 15th
Netflix’s Never Have I Ever – created by Mindy Kaling – was an instant hit upon its original release, and it didn’t take long at all for the streaming giant to decide to renew for a second season. Dropping on July 15th, the new series will continue to follow the trials and tribulations of Indian-American teen Devi, as she deals with the death of her father and navigating life as a teen with an Indian identity.
Sexy Beasts (S1), July 21st
Get ready for all things weird and wonderful with Sexy Beasts, Netflix’s new dating show with a difference. Disguising all participants with animal prosthetics, masks and more, the show explores whether singletons can find love based on personality alone – completely disguising everyone so potential matches can’t see what they look like. It’s basically the antithesis of Love Island, so it’s perfect for those needing a dose of something less superficial this summer.
Resort to Love, July 29th
Netflix’s rom-coms can only be described as one thing: a total guilty pleasure. Following the typical girl-meets-boy storyline that’s always guaranteed to cheer you up, new flick Resort To Love delivers when it comes to both casting (hello, Christina Milian!) and a millennial pull to their newest offering. In Resort To Love, struggling singer Erica (Milian) reluctantly accepts a gig at a wedding in paradise – before discovering it’s her ex-fiancé who’s set to walk down the aisle at said wedding.
