The Sugar Club has cemented itself as one of the city’s go-to live music venues, with the sounds of hip-hop, jazz, soul, Afrobeats and world music often radiating throughout the much-loved space. However, this March to May, the former theatre will host something a little different, but just as brilliant; The Sugar Club will be home to a series of Candlelight concerts, where classic rock and soul tunes will be reimagined in an ambient setting. Tickets to the events are available here.
First up, on March 21, March 31 and April 14, a string quartet will play ethereal covers of some of music’s biggest rock anthems, surrounded by flickering candles. AC/DC’s Highway to Hell, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Californication, and Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones are just a few of the melodies on the programme.
Then, just under a week later on April 20, the candlelit stage will be taken over by a smooth jazz band, who’ll play an hour of soul hits, from the likes of Four Tops and The Supremes. The programme is yet to be revealed, but we all know You Can’t Hurry Love, or a perfect candlelit evening…
To round off the candlelight performances at The Sugar Club, there’ll be a tribute to the legendary Fleetwood Mac on May 19. Their iconic tunes will be given a more classical twist, as they are performed by a pianist and violinist duo. Expect to hear Gypsy, Go Your Own Way and Gold Dust Women – to name just a few – in a brand-new way.
On each night, there’ll be two shows – one at 7pm, the other at 9pm – so you can choose a time most suited to your evening. Why not catch a meal before or after the performance? It’ll be the perfect beginning or end to a sensational evening of music – for which, you can snap up tickets here.
