Flamenco is a famous art form that has become synonymous with Spanish culture. Its origins are still somewhat of a mystery, but it’s believed that flamenco was born out of a blending of cultures within Andalusia over the past few centuries, with influences from Jewish, Muslim and Gypsy communities. This season, the unique ‘We Call It Flamenco’ experience featuring talented flamenco artists has opened its doors in Dublin to wow audiences with breathtaking performances of the historic musical tradition. Olé!
Flamenco dancers will twirl, spin, clap their hands and tap their feet while surrounded by a sea of flowers inside The O’Reilly Theatre. Tickets are on sale now, but places are limited. Don’t miss this spellbinding flamenco experience charged with all the intensity and excitement of the centuries-old Spanish art form.
What is “We Call It Flamenco”?
We Call It Flamenco takes audiences on a musical journey to celebrate all things flamenco. Wearing colorful trajes de flamenca (long flamenco dresses) and traditional mantones (Manila shawls), flamenco dancers will bring all the passion and flare of the beloved art form to the flower-enveloped stage as they’re guided by the rich sounds of flamenco music. Over the course of four acts, the cuadro (flamenco performers) will interpret original flamenco ‘palos’ and pay homage to their authentic sounds and dances.
Flamenco, its palos and the show
There are over 50 variants of flamenco known as ‘palos’. A palo can be categorised by many different ways, for example, based on its rhytmic pattern or the place it originates from. The palos reflect emotions of the human experience, from joy to anger, sadness to grief, and there’ll be a total of six performed on the night.
After performing the fandango, one of the most popular palos, the cuadro will then work their magic on the zambra, soleá por bulerías, tangos, cantiñas and bulería. Accompanied by hundreds of flowers and a play of light and shadow, the four-act show immerses audiences in the magic of duende – a heightened state of emotion many spectators feel during a powerful flamenco performance.
