The summer of the great outdoors just got a whole lot better.
While we still can’t enjoy indoor activities the way we used to pre-Covid, there’s still plenty of ways we can enjoy the outdoors this summer. And. if you’ve sorely missed the cinema, well, you’re in luck.
Dublin City Council have approved plans for an open air cinema to hit the streets this summer, sat on top of a multi-storey car park. There are also plans to include a gallery and exhibition on the fifth floor.
The rooftop cinema will be located at the top of the Trinity Street car park behind Dame Street, after plans were created by chef Niall Davidson, who runs the Atla restaurant and wine bar on Setanta Street. Permission has been granted to change the use of the upper storeys for three years.
The space is limited by the council as a gallery, cinema and restaurant, not a cocktail bar. It must also be shit between the hours of midnight and 8am every day. Concerns were raised that it could “morph into a full rooftop cocktail bar with only a small element of restaurant”.
According to current plans, the cinema will operate on Sundays and early weeknights, but it is unclear when the space will open as of now.
