Remember 20 years ago when being vegan or veggie meant a pile of potatoes and an assortment of greens on your plate whilst everyone else chowed down on beef or chicken? If you were lucky you got one of those nut roasts from the supermarket that needed drowning in vegan gravy to even be edible.
Well, those days are gone! Ireland’s embracing a meat-free diet now more than ever and the incredible Sons Of Butchers in Galway is living proof! They’re no strangers to meat, having grown up around it. In fact, the brains behind this incredible new business are descended from a long line of butchers and clearly, they see the way that the tide is turning.
A lot of people worry about the viability of a vegetarian or vegan diet, and let’s face it, a lot of Ireland’s favourite foods contain meat or dairy. However, it is possible to reduce your intake of meat and dairy and still feel satisfied, and it’s plant-based butchers like Sons Of Butchers that make this kind of diet genuinely enjoyable.
So what’s on offer?
Well, there’s plenty to look forward to. From burgers to chicken strips, sausages and mince, there are so many delicious options to choose from that my mouth is definitely watering as I write. There are a few stockists, too. Tesco, Dunnes Stores, and Super Valu have this new line of plant-based deliciousness and you can also order online. So, what are you waiting for? Veganuary’s calling and it’s already the end of January so you may as well give it a go (for a couple of days).
